The Cause |

We get asked a lot... why are you going to the Arctic in a BMW again??
Well, as much as it has to do with the adventure itself, more importantly it's all about the cause for us. Daniel's Father, Elias, has had kidney failure for around 15 years, and has been on dialysis for over 5. Interestingly enough, even though doctors know when a patient is diagnosed with severe kidney failure, they are not placed on the organ transplant list until they have reached a critical point in their health and the patient has been put on dialysis. From there on, it can be anywhere from a 5 to 10 year wait to receive a transplant. That is a very long time! For somebody on dialysis like Elias, this means that he must spend in excess of 6 hours a day doing dialysis confined to a small room. The truth is that this doesn't need to be so if more people were registered organ donors!
And it's not just kidneys that are in short supply, it's all organs.
The question begs to be asked..... have you Got Organs?
Did you know that apart from kidneys, it is possible to transplant things such as:
-Hearts -Heart Valves -Liver -Pancreas -Bowel -Skin -Muscle Tissue -Bone -Cornea
It's truly amazing what modern medicine can do!! Simply by looking at that list, you can see why there are a LOT of people waiting for organ transplants! When you think about it, you can probably name one or two people that YOU know who are affected by a disease or a condition affecting one of the aforementioned organs.
Sadly, due to the lack of donors today, 1 in 4 people waiting for an organ transplant will die waiting on the list.
In fact, there is a greater chance that you will at some point require an organ transplant than there is of you registering to become an organ donor.
Just by reading this webpage, you are one step closer to changing these statistics. They don't play in our favour no matter what, so why not help change them for the better!! It's really easy. Becoming an organ donor is one of the easiest and least time consuming things you can do. Keep reading!
People still INCORRECTLY believe that by holding a valid BC Drivers License you are a registered organ donor. This is no longer in effect! The new Organ Donor Registry replaces all previous ways of becoming an organ donor here in BC. But not to worry! Signing up has never been easier. With just your care card number and your mailing address, you can become an organ donor today!!
We are here to encourage you to do so. By spreading the word about such a silently desperate cause, and by doing something that is seemingly impossible and crazy, we hope to inspire people to do the not-so-impossible and not-so-crazy and sign up to become a registered organ donor today.
Check out this link, click it, and you can see for yourself how easy the process is!
